The Vintage Plus line of Delden Garage Doors is a very popular and affordable carriage door. The 25 gauge steel pre-painted doors are 2 inches thick insulated with polystyrene with a vinyl backing. They are reported to have an R-value of at least 6. Obviously these doors are not meant to be used in areas that have tough winters or where you are going to heat or cool your garage. One of the problems with using polystyrene insulated panels is that this type insulation leaves gaps which reduce the effectiveness of the insulation.
There is a wide range as well when it comes to choosing the material of the garage door. You can choose any one from Steel fiberglass plain old wood or polyethylene base don your requirements. Steel doors are the strongest and most durable whereas high density polyethylene doors never dent rust or fade and do not require to be repainted. Fiberglass doors can also be an option if you want some natural light to pass through as these materials are translucent and also maintenance free. Conventional wooden doors would well fit into your budget and requirements but the low initial cost might be deceiving as the maintenance cost is relatively higher than the other options; wooden doors require regular check ups for warps and rotting.
These doors can be chain driven either manually or can be automated using electric motors. Roll up doors require more frequent evaluation and servicing than a standard overhead garage door. The tracks that are mounted vertically on both sides of the garage opening need maintenance and cleaning more frequently and are often blocked by foreign obstructions or damaged by collision of some type. These roll up doors are often held open by some type of ratcheting action. Proper balancing of these doors is often more important than an overhead type of door as the weight of these type of doors is normally much greater than an overhead door.
This story was published in the "Far North Dallas Advocate" magazine in the March 2011 issue. It had a happy ending but how easily it could have turned tragic. What if the wife had not awakened during the night? What if the husband did not have a rifle? What if the robber struggled with the husband and took his rifle away? A simple robbery could have easily turned into a homicide. Now ask yourself this: "What if that had been your home and your family that were threatened?"
